Key ingredients for cognitive health

The market for cognitive health-oriented supplements is one of the fastest growing in the global nutraceutical industry. Memory, concentration, performance under stress, long-term neuroprotective protection: more and more consumers are looking for ingredients that support their brain function in a safe and evidence-based way.

For the formulator, the challenge is to select ingredients with a clear mechanism of action, adequate bioavailability and sufficient scientific support. Here we review the main ones.

Choline and phosphatidylcholine

Choline is an essential nutrient used by the body to synthesise acetylcholine, the main neurotransmitter involved in memory and learning. The forms most commonly used in formulation are:

  • Choline bitartrateStandard form, good bioavailability, affordable price.
  • Alpha-GPC (L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine)better crosses the blood-brain barrier; the preferred form in quality cognitive formulations.
  • Citicoline (CDP-choline)Choline: precursor of both choline and uridine; with evidence for neurological recovery and cognitive performance.

Bacopa monnieri

Adaptogenic plant from Ayurvedic medicine with one of the strongest evidence profiles in cognitive health. Extracts standardised to bacosides show improvement in episodic memory, processing speed and reduced anxiety in multiple clinical trials.

Its effect is gradual: the most significant studies show improvements after 8-12 weeks of continuous use.

Ginkgo biloba

Standardised ginkgo leaf extract (EGb 761, with 24% of flavonoglucosides and 6% of terpenolactones) is one of the phytochemicals with the highest volume of research into neurodegenerative pathologies and cognitive deterioration associated with ageing. It acts as an antioxidant, cerebral vasodilator and neurotransmitter modulator.

Phosphatidylserine

Phospholipid present in nerve cell membranes. Phosphatidylserine supplementation (especially of plant origin: sunflower or soya) has clinical support for maintaining cognitive function in older adults and for performance under stress. It is one of the cognitive ingredients with the most approved health claims in several jurisdictions.

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Medicinal mushroom whose extract stimulates the synthesis of NGF (Nerve Growth Factor), essential for neuronal maintenance and regeneration. With growing evidence for memory, concentration and neuroprotection. Its popularity in the medicinal mushroom segment has grown exponentially in the last three years.

L-Theanine

Amino acid found in green tea that induces a state of «relaxed alertness» by increasing alpha wave activity in the brain. Widely used in combination with caffeine to improve cognitive performance without the negative effects of pure stimulation (anxiety, crash). Well tolerated form, with no relevant side effects at standard doses.

B vitamins and brain health

Vitamins B6, B9 (folate) and B12 are particularly relevant in cognitive health because of their role in homocysteine metabolism (a marker of neurodegenerative risk) and neurotransmitter synthesis. The active forms (pyridoxal-5-phosphate, methylfolate, methylcobalamin) have bioavailability advantages over the standard forms.

Considerations for the formulator

Cognitive formulas often combine several ingredients with complementary mechanisms: choline source (substrate) + botanical nootropic (modulator) + membrane phospholipid (structural) + adaptogen (stress management). The synergy between components is a differential argument for the advanced consumer.

Brain bioavailability is a determining criterion: not all ingredients cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently, and the chemical form of the ingredient may be decisive here.

In a nutshell

Cognitive health is a category with high demand, high perceived value and an increasingly informed consumer. Ingredients with specific clinical evidence and highly bioavailable forms best position a formula in this segment.
